Art becomes meaningful, transformative, and captivating when we're able to participate in it - when we're invited to contribute to it, rather than being forced to just stand back and observe in silence.

About

About

My name is Rachel Rudeen. I am a Kansas-grown, Oregon-trained ceramic artist and photographer based in Lawrence, KS. Much of my inspiration and aesthetic comes from the Northwest where I was exposed to the incredible artists, scenery, and culture that exist there. Like the quote listed on the Home page by Ben Irwin, I believe art is most effective when others can participate in and with it. It is for this reason that I create mostly functional ceramics as well as photograph life's milestones.

My joy comes from knowing that people can interact with my work, whether that be through enjoying a cup of coffee in a handmade mug or coming together over a meal served on one-of-a-kind dinnerware. In participating with my work, community can be fostered and relationships enriched. I find that my art becomes much more effective when it is taken off the shelf and used, over and over and over again.

Photography presents a different aspect of participating with others in my art, in that the creation process itself would be impossible if it were not for other people. I love experiencing the relationships that are present when photographing special occasions, and being able to capture them on camera so those occasions can be re-lived indefinitely.

In everything, quality of the product is my highest priority. I can assure that with each piece created and every photo taken, great care and attention to detail goes into creating a unique, lasting finished product.
